There are all sorts of headache-inducing problems you can have if you intend to use certain fonts in certain projects, especially if said projects are on the web. This is where TransType comes in. It is capable of organizing font families and fix various font-related problems. What's more, the application gives you the possibility of converting your fonts. You can experiment with OpenType, TrueType or @font-face web fonts, turn them into monochrome or colored fonts and more.

The software is free to try, without any significant functionality restrictions. You can download it and install it in just a few seconds, on Windows or Mac OS X platforms. There are no special requirements you have to meet and you don't need powerful hardware to run the application.

Converting fonts is a simple matter of dragging and dropping them over the application's user interface, selecting the output format and path and clicking a button. However, there are a few other things you can do, before you start the conversion process. Imported fonts are displayed on one of four tiles and you can click them and drag them to different tiles, if you want to make them bold, italic and so on.

Besides loading font files, it is also possible to load fonts that are installed in the system, which can be selected on a separate window. Fonts can be previewed on the left side of the user interface, where you can also find some general information about them. Additionally, you can bring up a glyph map for each font.

TransType provides you with several conversion profiles, for turning your fonts to .otf, .ttf, .pfb and others, which can be selected in the upper-right corner of the main window. You can also choose a destination for the output fonts, like the original location, the desktop, a selected folder or other locations.

If you have problems with your fonts, then it's clear that you haven't heard of TransType yet.

Pros

You can convert fonts quickly and easily. The software supports various formats and it lets you turn fonts to colored or monochrome.

Cons

On Windows 10, the application hangs when you click and drag a font to another tile, but it can be solved if you hit CTRL+ALT+DEL.
